European Parliament Elections

Malta has been represented in the European Parliament since May 2003, i.e. one year before full accession to the European Union on 1 May 2004. Following Malta’s signature of the Treaty of Accession on 16 April 2003, following a decision by the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, the Maltese Parliament was invited to nominate five of its members as observers in the European Parliament to observe its work until the time of formal accession to the European Union. The status of these observers was transformed to that of full Members of the European Parliament as from the date of accession until the end of that legislature.

The Maltese citizens voted for the first time in direct European Parliament elections on 6 June 2004, when five Members of the European Parliament were elected. Malta obtained a sixth seat in the European Parliament following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty in December 2009.
