Member of Parliament, Edward Zammit Lewis, participates in the Meeting of the Chairpersons of COSAC meeting in Tallinn, Estonia
Member of Parliament, Edward Zammit Lewis, represented the Maltese Parliament in the meeting of the Chairpersons of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) which was held in Talinn, Estonia. This is the first inter-parliamentary meeting organised within the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
On 9 July, Zammit Lewis participated in the meeting of the Presidential Troika of COSAC, currently composed of Estonia, Malta, Bulgaria and the European Parliament. He congratulated the Estonian Parliament for the ambitious agenda proposed for the LVIII Plenary Session of COSAC, taking place between 26 and 28 November 2017 in Talinn, and expressed positive remarks on the inclusion of migration as one of the topics for discussion.
On 10 July, the participants of the COSAC Chairpersons Meeting were given an overview of the priorities of Estonia's Presidency of the Council of the European Union by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia – Juri Ratas. On this item on the agenda Zammit Lewis addressed the Chairpersons of COSAC remarking that Estonia, like Malta, is a small state, nonetheless it embarked on an ambitious project entailing great responsibilities and duties. Speaking on the second priority of the Estonian Presidency, A Safe and Secure Europe, he underlined the importance of the Mediterranean dimension as being part of the solution, reiterating that there cannot be peace and security in Europe without stability in the Mediterranean. Turning his attention to another main Presidency priority, Zammit Lewis emphasized the importance of the completion of the single digital market. He explained that this strategy will be a positive step towards the full realization of the Union’s internal market which will result in economic growth and generate new and better quality employment across the Union.
Finally, the COSAC Chairperson’s Meeting, adopted the preliminary agenda for the COSAC plenary meeting to be held in November and approved the outline of the 28th Bi-annual Report which will be drawn up ahead of the same meeting.
