Canadian High Commisioner calls on Deputy Speaker
The High Commissioner of Canada Alexandra Bugailiskis called on Deputy Speaker Claudette Buttigieg.
The Deputy Speaker welcomed the new High Commissioner and referred to the strong connections between the two countries owing to the presence of the Maltese diaspora in Canada, which is the third largest and which is mainly concentrated in Toronto, where the official presence of the Maltese community currently stands at 40,000.
The two dignitaries discussed issues related to domestic violence and to trade. They noted that Canada is an important trade partner and is presently the eighth largest trading partner of Malta and the sixth largest in terms of imports.
The relations between the EU and Canada featured in the discussion, with particular reference to the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, with Malta being the third EU country to ratify it.
Alexandra Bugailiskis was accompanied by Cristina Faessler, Economic and Political Officer at the High Commission of Canada in Rome.
