The proposed construction of six villas in the heart of Mizieb, Mellieħa, exposes a critical flaw in our 2014 rural policy. This proposal has led to confusion and unnecessary development within the invaluable and sensitive Mizieb woodlands. These woodlands are not just a natural treasure; they are an integral part of our community's identity.
Our current policies have allowed for loopholes that permit such developments on ODZ (Outside Development Zone) land. This is unacceptable. It is time for urgent government intervention to swiftly update these policies, closing such loopholes and ensuring that old property on ODZ land is reinstated as such.
The Mizieb woodlands are home to diverse flora and fauna, making them an ecological hotspot worth preserving. Furthermore, they serve as a green lung for Mellieħa, contributing significantly to air quality and overall environmental health.
Strict measures must be implemented immediately to prevent any further unnecessary development that threatens these vital areas. We need clear guidelines that prioritize sustainable development over short-term economic gains.
This petition calls upon the relevant authorities to take immediate action against this proposal and any similar future proposals which threaten our precious natural spaces. Description of works: Proposed demolition of existing approved agricultural shed/glasshouse, apartments and restaurant. Proposed construction of 6 residential dwellings including the construction of pools and rubble walls.
