Reintroduction of the Russian Language into Malta Examination Curriculum
Date petition closes for signatures
NATALIA ALEXANDROVNA CAMILLERI
For over 30 years, Russian language exams have been part of Malta’s education system, contributing to the continuity of language education. In 2024, students could still take Russian in the MATSEC exams at ordinary, intermediate, and advanced levels. However, from 2025, the Russian language will no longer be offered, as it has been removed from the list of available subjects. This change restricts students&; access to the Russian language, which is spoken by over 250 million people worldwide and widely used across all continents. Outside of Russia, it is also prominently spoken in major countries including Germany, France, Spain, Turkey and the United States.
The Russian language is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations organisation, the most significant international organisation, founded in 1945 and currently made up of 193 Member States, maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.
The continuation of Russian language examinations is essential for the following reasons:
1. Educational Continuity;
2. Inclusivity, Cultural Heritage and Diversity;
3. International Opportunities.

The continuation of Russian language examinations is essential for the following reasons:
1. Educational Continuity: For over three decades, these exams have not only supported educational continuity but also strengthened Malta’s educational and cultural ties with Russian-speaking countries, including Russia, Estonia, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. These connections are vital for fostering international collaboration and understanding.
2. Inclusivity, Cultural Heritage and Diversity: Maintaining the Russian language examinations is essential for upholding the rich cultural heritage of Russian-speaking students, especially those from mixed backgrounds, and facilitating their integration into Maltese culture, education, and community life. By continuing these examinations, we not only help these students maintain strong connections to their cultural roots but also foster inclusivity within the Maltese educational system. This initiative enhances the multicultural diversity, promoting understanding and respect across different backgrounds, and supports the integration of Russian-speaking students into the broader Maltese society.
3. International Opportunities: Proficiency in Russian opens significant academic and professional doors to the students, enhancing their future educational and career prospects.
We invite you to join us in supporting the continuation of the Russian language in Malta's examination curriculum by signing this petition.
As parents, students, educators, and community members, we believe that by working together, we can preserve linguistic diversity, enhance important international connections, and ensure that future generations have access to the rich cultural heritage and global opportunities that proficiency in the Russian language offers.
