Grievance
To the Honourable Speaker and Members of Parliament,

We, the undersigned, respectfully submit this petition calling for legislative action to safeguard public health and the environment through a phased total ban on plastic drinking bottles and non-stick cookware containing harmful chemical coatings.

Scientific evidence increasingly links microplastics and PFAS-related substances, commonly found in plastic bottles and non-stick pans, to serious health risks. These include increased cancer risk, hormonal and endocrine disruption, reproductive disorders, immune system damage, and other chronic illnesses. Plastic bottles may release microplastics into drinking water, particularly when exposed to heat or prolonged storage. Non-stick cookware, especially when scratched or overheated, can release toxic substances into food and the air.

Given Malta’s dense population, limited land resources, and rising public health costs, continued exposure to these materials presents a long-term risk that requires preventive action rather than reactive treatment.

We therefore respectfully request that Parliament:

Introduce a phased ban on the importation, sale, and distribution of plastic water bottles and PFAS-based non-stick cookware;

Establish a reasonable transition period for consumers and businesses;

Promote and incentivise safer alternatives, including glass and stainless-steel bottles, public water refill stations, and cookware made from stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel, or certified PFAS-free ceramic;

Launch a national public awareness campaign on the health risks of microplastics and toxic coatings;

Support businesses transitioning to safer products through incentives or reduced duties.

Preventive measures of this nature will reduce long-term healthcare costs, improve quality of life, and reduce environmental pollution. This petition is a call for responsible, science-based governance that places the health of present and future generations first.

Respectfully submitted,

Wherefore I/we respectfully request the House of Representatives to
Introduce a phased ban on the importation, sale, and distribution of plastic water bottles and PFAS-based non-stick cookware;

Establish a reasonable transition period for consumers and businesses;

Promote and incentivise safer alternatives, including glass and stainless-steel bottles, public water refill stations, and cookware made from stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel, or certified PFAS-free ceramic;

Launch a national public awareness campaign on the health risks of microplastics and toxic coatings;

Support businesses transitioning to safer products through incentives or reduced duties.
