Speaker of the House of Representatives Dr Anġlu Farrugia has received the new Ambassador of Portugal Francisco Ribeiro Telles on a courtesy visit. Speaker Farrugia referred to the stable and friendly relations that exist between Malta and Portugal, that were diplomatically established in November 1968. He also mentioned the two Portuguese Grand Masters, namely Manoel de Vilhena and Manuel Pinto de Fonseca, and noted that the former had introduced the Portuguese currency Escudo in Malta. The two digintaries highlighted the various high-level contacts, which include meetings between the Presidents and Prime Ministers of the two countries. The two sides discussed various issues of mutual interest, particularly at Parliamentary level, with Speaker Farrugia referring to the election of the António Pedro Roque da Visitação Oliveira, a Member of the Portuguese Parliament, as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean. The Ambassador of Portugal was accompanied by Counsellor at the Embassy of Portugal in Rome Francisco Azevedo.
