Speaker Farrugia receives delegation from the House of Representatives, National Diet of Japan
A delegation from the House of Representatives, National Diet of Japan that is currently on a visit to Malta, has paid a courtesy visit on the Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia.
Speaker Farrugia expressed his sympathies to the Japanese Parliamentarians and Japanese people in general on the 72nd Anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings which took place on 6th and 9th August 1945 respectively. Director, Standing Committee on Fundamental National Policies, Mr Ryu, expressed his appreciation for the sentiments of condolences conveyed by Mr Speaker.
The two sides highlighted the strong and amicable relations that exist between Malta and Japan, which relations were established diplomatically fifty-two years ago. The recent visit to Malta by Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, has further enhanced these relations.
They discussed issues of mutual interest, such as Malta’s Presidency of the Council of the EU (with particular reference to the Parliamentary Dimension of the said Presidency), trade and commercial ties between the two countries, Japan’s relations with the EU and the outcome of Brexit.
They also exchanged views on the procedures of the respective national Parliaments and on how to strengthen the good and friendly relations between the two Parliaments.
The delegation from the Japanese Diet consisted of the Director of thr Standing Committee on Fundamental National Policies, MP Hirofumi Ryu, and MP Takashi Endo from the Standing Committee on Rules and Administration.
They were accompanied by Secretaries at the Japanese House of Representatives, Mr Yukihiko Noguchi and Mr Hiroyasu Kondo, as well the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Mr Tomoyuki Yoshida. Minister Hiroshi Yamauchi, Mr Toshihiro Go, Mr Daisuke Nishida and Ms Sayaka Shingu (Interpreter) from the Japanese Embassy in Rome participated in the meeting.
Clerk of the House of Representatives Mr Ray Scicluna, and Malta’s Ambassador to Japan, Andre’ Spiteri, were also present.
