Deputy Speaker receives courtesy visit by the Ambassador of the Republic of Ethiopia

Deputy Speaker Claudette Buttigieg received a courtesy visit by the Ambassador of the Republic of Ethiopia Zenebu Tadesse.

After welcoming the new Ethiopian Ambassador, the Deputy Speaker referred to the good and friendly relations that exist between Malta and Ethiopia.

She highlighted the wide range of projects carried out in Ethiopia by various Maltese NGOs, which projects were co-financed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion through Official Development Aid funds. She mentioned the twinning between the Gozitan village of Qala and the Ethiopian village of Bopa, and praised the work carried out by a number of volunteers who visit Bopa each year to assist in the construction of housing for the villagers.

Deputy Speaker Buttigieg and Ambassador Tadesse referred to issues of mutual interest, including trade exchanges and the potential of the Ethiopian economy. They spoke about issues related to women and children in poverty and the economic empowerment of women.

The two dignitaries mentioned cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries. Moreover, the relations between the European Union and the Republic of Ethiopia also featured in their discussion.

Ambassador Tadesse was accompanied by Melaku Petros Tetenku, Chargé d’Affaires, and Amsalu Alena Adela, Second Secretary, Embassy of the Republic of Ethiopia, Rome.
